English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are designed and taught by some of the most experienced instructors in Vancouver.  Our ESL program delivers exceptional instruction to help you achieve your goals, whether you’re a newcomer to Canada or an international student looking to enhance your English skills. The program’s clearly structured levels and flexible scheduling allow you to learn at your own pace while maintaining high academic standards. Whether your aim is to expand your career opportunities or excel in your studies, we provide the support you need to succeed.

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • No proof of English language proficiency required (initial placement test given)
  • Progress tests conducted every 4 weeks
  • Regular evaluations enable prompt level adjustments to match your academic needs.
  • Optional exam preparation courses available for IELTS, TOEIC, and TOEFL)
Students who enroll in a language program which is six months or less in duration or for which tuition is less than $4,000 may not make a claim against the Student Tuition Protection Fund, which is managed by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post- Secondary Education and Future Skills. Further, this language program may not have been reviewed or approved by PTIRU.

 

English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP)

The English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) program prepares students for success in English-medium post-secondary education. The program is structured across three progressive levels:

  • EAP 1 (Intermediate)
  • EAP 2 (Upper-Intermediate)
  • EAP 3 (Lower Advanced)

Each level is 10 weeks (200 instructional hours), for a total program length of 30 weeks (600 hours).

Students develop integrated academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, with emphasis on:

  • Academic essay structure and argumentation
  • Critical analysis of academic texts
  • Lecture comprehension and note-taking
  • Academic presentations and seminar discussion
  • Academic vocabulary development
  • Research and source integration

Entry Requirements

Minimum age: 16 years

Students may enter the appropriate level based on placement testing or recognized English proficiency scores.

Typical entry benchmarks:
EAP 1: IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent)
EAP 2: IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent)
EAP 3: IELTS 6.0–6.5 (or equivalent)

Placement is determined by official test results or internal assessment.

English Language Proficiency Equivalencies (Upon Successful Completion)

The following equivalencies reflect demonstrated outcomes upon successful completion of each level:
• EAPP 1 Exit: IELTS 5.5
• EAPP 2 Exit: IELTS 6.5
• EAPP 3 Exit: IELTS 7.0+

Equivalencies are based on curriculum outcomes, integrated assessment, and demonstrated academic competency.

Successful completion requires:
• Final grade of 70% or higher
• Minimum 80% attendance
• Completion of all required assessments

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility

No programs offered by Davis Academy are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit. Graduates are not eligible to apply for a PGWP. Any work during studies, including co-op or off-campus work, requires appropriate IRCC authorization.
